THE SOUND YOU MAY NOT EXPECT
Data centers operate continuously. Cooling systems, fans, pumps, transformers, HVAC systems, and backup generators can create tonal and low-frequency noise.
People may describe these sounds as humming, buzzing, droning, rumbling, or vibration.
Low-frequency noise can be difficult to address using simple average sound measurements. Standard A-weighted decibel measurements may underrepresent the impact of low-frequency components that residents perceive as intrusive.
Research on environmental low-frequency noise has associated exposure with effects including annoyance, sleep disturbance, difficulty concentrating, headaches, and perceived vibration.
The long-term health effects specifically attributable to data-center noise remain an area needing additional research. Communities should consider the potential for continuous noise impacts when evaluating proposed facilities, particularly those near residential areas.
