WHAT IS A HYPERSCALE DATA CENTER?
Most people hear “data center” and imagine a building filled with computers. Hyperscale data centers operate on an entirely different level.
These massive facilities support enormous amounts of computing for services such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, streaming, digital storage, and large technology platforms.
The issue is not simply the computers inside the building. The issue is the scale of the infrastructure and resources required to operate them.
A single hyperscale facility may require the electrical equivalent of powering tens of thousands of homes. Some facilities may require millions of gallons of water per day for cooling. They need expanded wastewater capacity, substantial utility infrastructure, and transmission improvements — while generally creating comparatively few permanent employment opportunities relative to those demands.
